Eric J. Westby, PhD is the Director of the Institute of Catholic Theology in Phoenix, Arizona. He is also the Director of Parish and School Catechesis at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. He is an assistant professor of Theology for Franciscan University of Steubenville. He received his doctorate from Liverpool Hope University, with his thesis entitled "Equipping the Catechist of Catechists: A Critical Discussion of Seminary Formation in Light of Priestly Ministry in Catechesis." He holds a Masters of Arts degree in Theology and Christian Ministry from Franciscan University in Steubenville, from where he was the first student to complete the graduate specialization in catechetics. He holds a Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies from the Center for Ministry Development, and has been involved in full-time catechesis since 1988. He is a regular presenter at the summer St. John Bosco Catechetical Conference at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. He has published youth ministry materials through YOU! Press and is the founder of ymcentral.com and rciacentral.com. More importantly, he is husband to Nikki and father of five beautiful girls.
Bill brings to ICT many years of Catholic pastoral ministry experience at both parish and diocesan levels with a wide-ranging knowledge and expertise in developing program strategies in the work of evangelization, catechesis, discipleship, and spearheading missionary project teams and six World Youth Day pilgrimages.
From 2013 to 2020 Bill served as Pastoral Associate and Parish Manager at St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic parish in Chandler, AZ. Under the supervision of the pastor he was responsible for all administration and pastoral oversite of the staff, the directing of the RCIA program, the Catholic Training Academy, the Men in Mission apostolates. Prior to Bill’s appointment to St. Andrews he served as Director of Youth and Young Adult Evangelization for the Diocese of Phoenix, giving support, training and vision to pastors and youth leaders throughout the diocese for effective youth and young adult evangelization.
Since 1984 Bill has been pioneering a variety of new methods of evangelization and catechesis through the founding of Youth Arise North America (a Catholic School of Evangelization - now Caritas in Veritate) and Catholic Network Ministry, a partnership with Young Life. From 1994 to 2000, he served as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel’s Director of Youth and Young Adults, and in 1999 received the “Vision Award” from the Diocese of Phoenix in Youth Evangelization.
Bill holds a MA Theology Degree from the University of San Francisco. Has been a frequent workshop speaker at the St. John Bosco Conference in Steubenville, Ohio and speaks at various conferences and workshops throughout the Diocese of Phoenix. He is currently an active board member of the National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.
He married his lovely wife Beth in January of 1987. They have five children and six grandchildren, and his family reside in Tempe, AZ. and attend Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish.
